The Race
We invite you to come to Belize and tackle the 16th annual La Ruta
Maya Belize River Challenge. You start in a San Ignacio and finish 4
days & nearly 180 miles later in Belize City with thousands cheering
you on. We will provide you everything you need except the intestinal
fortitude to complete in the 2nd longest 3 person canoe race in the
world. After the race we'll whisk you away to the beach for a couple
recovery days, you'll need it!
The Race. Almost 180 miles of paddling down the Belize River. Everyone starts
early on Friday morning and stops to camp together each night. Every morning its a
shotgun start and off again to conquer the next stage. The British Army keeps your
official time and the standings are determined by your accumulative time over four
days on the river.
During the race our support crew sets up your tent each day, cooks and serves your
meals and fixes your cocktails while you recover each evening. After the race begins
each day the support crew breaks down camp, travels to the next stop, sets it up
again and is there to greet you as you come in each afternoon.
The winners of this race are world class teams but every single team is racing the
other canoes around them. The paddlers in the race vary in experience levels from
the world class to the novice. A great deal of canoing experience is not required but
having the heart to compete in a marathon-like event is. When you get to Belize we
will put you in a canoe for a couple afternoons but you should come here with an
idea that your three person team can paddle together and, as importantly, still be
friends after 4 hard days on the river. Being in reasonably good physical condition is
recommended.
Our professional photographer travels with us recording the event. Upon completion
of the race you will be able to pick out several of your favorite pictures to include in
your personalized, leather bound, coffee table style book that we will have shipped
to your home. Additionally you will be provided with a CD full of pictures from the
race. .

Bringing A Friend. You are welcome to bring an adult, non-racing, friend or spouse
along for a significant discount. Of course they will not paddle in the race but will be
able to participate in all aspects of the experience including camping during race
days, tours to area sites and the following time on the beach.
What If I Cannot Finish The Race? La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is not
easy. Teams and individuals drop out of the race every year. If any one in the La
Ruta Maya Outfitters teams drops out of the race they will be able to stay with the
Outfitter's camp and carry on supporting their fellow racers. They may accompany
the teams to the beach and leave Belize as originally scheduled. If 1 member of
the 3 person team is unable to continue at any point the remaining 2 paddlers may
continue and finish the race. It happens all the time. (See official race rules for
further details.) There are no refunds for paddlers dropping out of the race and of
course you may change your flight and leave early.
Medical Care. In addition to certified EMS Technicians in La Ruta Maya's Safety
Crews we also have our own EMT traveling with us. Additionally there are several
area hospitals with a full compliment of medical professionals. Any outside
treatment would be at the paddler's expense.
